All newly appointed recruit officers are required to participate in and successfully complete the agency’s Field Training Program. Specially trained Field Training Officers (FTOs) are assigned to each new recruit and are required to train, accurately evaluate, and document their progress.
FTOs play a pivotal role in in developing a new recruit into a fully trained officer capable of “solo-assignment” within the agency. Experienced officers that meet the minimum qualifications to be an FTO must undergo a competitive selection process prior to being appointed, and then must undergo specialized training before being assigned a recruit.
FTOs undergo continual training for this role and must be familiar with all aspects of the Field Training Program and the Department’s General Orders.
