Chief Mechanic
SUMMARY:
Performs a wide variety of complex mechanical duties to repair and maintain a variety of vehicles and equipment of the Department and such other departments, as assigned. Supervises mechanics and operation of Town garage. May also be involved in other activities of the Municipal Services Department for which he/she is qualified.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

- Responsible for overall operation and maintenance of Town garage to meet municipal & State requirements.
- Assist in the planning and layout of projects, including a long range equipment replacement plan (i.e., preparation of bid specifications and solicitation of viable quotes through bid process).
- Responsible for daily administrative functions, including purchase requisitions and personnel administration.
- Advises the Deputy Director of Public Works regularly on the status of equipment and personnel.
- Supervises and assists mechanics in the performance of their duties.
- Interacts with other departments for vehicle needs including gas codes and usage.
- Monitors gas and fuel levels and orders as needed to ensure productivity of vehicles.
- Performs a variety of preventive maintenance tasks such as lubrication changes, greasing and repairs to keep vehicles at maximum efficiency.
- Performs complex major and minor repairs to return out of service vehicles and equipment to use.
- Maintains appropriate vehicle and equipment records as directed as well as computerized maintenance and evaluation of equipment.
- Inspects work of mechanics for compliance with specifications and safety standards.
- Performs State Inspections on all Town vehicles as designated.
- Performs other related work as required.
SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS FOR THE POSITION:
- Graduate of high school, vocational or technical school, or have an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- At least five years’ experience at the level of master automotive mechanic, preferably with some experience in a supervisory capacity.
- Thorough knowledge of automotive and equipment repair and maintenance methods.
- Ability to plan and direct the work of others.
- Must hold and maintain a current State of New Hampshire motor vehicle Inspection License.
- Must hold a valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).
OTHER CONSIDERATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS:
- Reliability and ability to get along with others.
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
- Must be in good physical condition and able to perform manual labor, sometimes under adverse conditions.
- Must respond to emergency situations.
- Will perform other related duties under the direction of the Deputy Director of Municipal Services and his/her designee.
- Required to operate snow plows, salt trucks and other such vehicles.
- Must be a positive team player who consistently exhibits a professional and courteous manner.
