The Pregnant Workers Fairness Act (PWFA) is an important civil rights law that ensures pregnant and postpartum workers are not forced off the job and can receive the accommodations they need without facing discrimination or retaliation in the workplace. The PWFA gives workers the right to receive reasonable accommodations for limitations related to pregnancy, childbirth, and related medical conditions, unless providing these accommodations would create an "undue hardship" for the employer. This law helps millions of pregnant workers and those who have recently given birth to protect their health without risking their jobs. It represents a significant step forward for gender, racial, and economic justice across the country. The PWFA became effective on June 27, 2023.
